چکیده
We present results of optical spectroscopic observations of candidates of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z ∼ 5 in the region including the GOODS-N and the J0053+1234 region by using GMOS-N and GMOS-S, respectively. Among 25 candidates, five objects are identified to be at z ∼ 5 (two of them were already identified by an earlier study) and one object very close to the color-selection window turned out to be a foreground galaxy. With this spectroscopically identified sample and those from previous studies, we derived the lower limits on the number density of bright (MUV < −22.0 mag) LBGs at z ∼ 5. These lower limits are comparable to or slightly smaller than the number densities of UV luminosity functions (UVLFs) that show the smaller number density among z ∼ 5 UVLFs in literature. However, by considering that there remain many LBG candidates without spectroscopic observations, the number density of bright LBGs is expected to increase by a factor of two or more. The evidence for the deficiency of UV luminous LBGs with large Lyα equivalent widths was reinforced. We discuss possible causes for the deficiency and prefer the interpretation of dust absorption. We present the results of spectroscopy of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z∼5 in the J0053+1234 field with the Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph on the Subaru telescope. Among 5 bright candidates with z < 25.0 mag, 2 objects are confirmed to be at z ∼ 5 from their Lyα emission and the continuum depression shortward of Lyα. The EWs of Lyα emission of the 2 LBGs are not so strong to be detected...
متن کاملThe first galaxies: structure and stellar populations
The Hubble Deep Fields continue to be a valuable resource for studying the distant universe, particularly at z > 2 where their comoving volume becomes large enough to encompass several hundred L∗ galaxies or their progenitors. Here I present recent results from a near–infrared imaging survey of the HDF–North with NICMOS, which provides structural and photometric information in the optical rest ...

Aims. We want to study the IR (> 8 μm) emission of samples of galaxies selected in their rest-frame UV in a very homogeneous way (wavelength and luminosity) from z = 0 to z = 1: comparing their UV and IR rest-frame emissions will allow us to study the evolution of dust attenuation with z as well as to check if a UV selection is able to track all the star formation. This UV selection will also b...
متن کاملPhysical Conditions in Lyman Break Galaxies Derived From Rest - Frame UV Spectra
We present the results of detailed studies of the astrophysical conditions in z ∼ 3 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs), placing particular emphasis on what is learned from LBG rest frame UV spectra. By drawing from our database of ∼ 1000 spectra, and constructing higher S/N composite spectra from galaxies grouped according to properties such as luminosity, extinction, morphology, and environment, we c...

We report the discovery of a z ∼ 9 Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) candidate, selected from the NICMOS Parallel Imaging Survey as a J-dropout with J110 H160 = 1.7. Spitzer/IRAC photometry reveals that the galaxy has a blue H160 3.6 μm color, and a spectral break between 3.6 and 4.5 μm. We interpret this break as the Balmer break, and derive a best-fit photometric redshift of z ∼ 9. We use Monte Carlo ...
